Adversity or growth
As we enter into this new year, I am mindful that there is sometimes, for some people, a let down after the months of holidays from Halloween to Christmas and New Year’s. I believe that it’s easier to ignore our feelings of discouragement, frustration and irritation- or exchange them, like that hideous top your Aunt Mary gave you, for negative holiday feelings when you get around your family of origin (FOO as we like to call in the counseling world.) We’re distracted during these times and I know for myself it is harder when the decorations and lights come down and I’m faced with the bleak, grey days of winter.
While vacationing in California for Christmas, I saw this little guy growing in the middle of rocks in San Pedro at the marina. It just stuck with me through the next few days as I find myself dreading the back to work, back to school, back to reality of life next week. We can choose to use these times to grow or remain stuck in between the rocks, fighting the sun.
C.S.Lewis said “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” Are you feeling ordinary? Are you feeling tired, overwhelmed or angry? Call, let’s sit down together and come up with a plan to take control of your destiny.
